The config.sys file just says 'FILES=40' autoexec.bat and config.sys are both legacy files from early MSDOS days. They were instructions to the computer on how to boot, what programs to load, what configuration settings to use. They're now irrelevant in modern operating systems so I can only assume you're running some clunky old DOS software that requires them in order to run. I'm guessing you've recently installed something that created basic files so that it can run effectively. No i dont have a clunky old system, I have a brand new toshiba laptop with vista. I recently did a recovery of it (has the recovery partition and have recovered numerous times) but as I said I have never noticed this before so im not sure if it was there before, does all vista operating systems have these files? I have installed only one new program from the last setup and that was a seagate freego portable hard drive, so I am not sure if that's what may have done it, I did not actually install it i started to but then stopped it because i had other stuff to do.

No i dont have a clunky old system You misunderstand – I am sure your PC is quite good (hey – you're running Vista!). It's a piece of software that's old & clunky. Who knows what software it was that needed these entries, but they're entirely harmless so just leave things as they are & you'll be fine. EDIT So I did a quick google and it looks like these entries are installed by default by Vista for its 16-bit emulation.
In other words they're there just in case you run some old & crappy 16 bit application. Alls fine – just leave the files as they are.

I have read various forums and people say its on all vista computers. (as mentioned I have not noticed this before, maybe it was there before and i dunno maybe the computer decided to make it visible) as seen here However I cannot work it out why the files are no longer visible when I go to show hidden files yet I can still see the files when I view the directory in command. I could see them earlier! This is the hard drive. It seems to have a heap of tools. Its the small freeagent go one anychance you could list your c drive in command and see if its there.
