Tim, I tested this 'solution' tonight and unfortunately, it does not work. It cannot find the scanner, even if I run the software that HP provides in XP SP2 compatability mode. Is there such a thing as a generic scanner driver for Windows 7 that would work? I am not buying a new scanner to scan 10 photographs. I might, however, buy a new Windows XP PC because I'm getting tired of these problems with Windows 7.

This is not the only hardware I have had trouble with, including some that I purchased in the Fall of 2008. Thanks for any info, Julia. I installed the last updated hp4200c driver from hp.com (sj655en.exe) as administrator and it worked fine. This was not true during the 1st 18 months of Vista's life. About every quarter I would try the hp4200c scanjet and it failed to work but with the results of sucessful install. Vista would not recognize the scanjet or it could not find the driver to install after you plugged in the usb connection. Then one day it started working after about 18 months after I got Vista 32bit.
Some more changes occurred with the drivers provided via the the windows update system; unexpected by me. Meanwhile HP still says it's not supported under Vista or Win7. Latest change was around November 2011, the scanjet stopped working again.

I uninstalled it and installed it again but got some errors, which lead me to use the option of install (as adminitrator) the sj655en.exe file for the driver. Usually you can do this by right mouse click on the sj655en.exe file and the drop down menu should have that option. One of the earlier things I tried that got it to work was to change all of the hp scanjet 4200's program properties to run in compatibility mode as XP service pack2 but at my last look of these exe files, it seems to be NOT required anymore.
