Hi alistair49, Firstly, is your laptop connected to the internet when trying to install your scanner? Windows 7 will automatically browse Microsoft's online database of drivers if it's not found in your laptop database.
If you are in fact having driver issues, have you checked the following web page to locate your scanner software? If, however, you have the drivers, make sure that these are compatible with Windows 7 as your scanner was manufactured before Windows 7 existed. In this case try using Windows 7 compatibility wizard to install your scanner software.
You can do this by right-clicking on the installation file & selecting 'troubleshoot compatibility' from the drop-down menu. Simply follow the on-screen directions step by step to check if Windows 7 has compatibility issues with your scanner software. In most cases this procedure should solve your problem.

You cannot install the software when logged in using added administrator accounts. Place the CanoScan Setup Utility CD-ROM in the drive. Double-click the CD-ROM icon. Double-click the MacOS X folder/icon.

Note: Some versions of the CanoScan Setup CD-ROM will not include the Mac OS X version of Toolbox. If this is the case, you should download and install Toolbox from Canon's website. If you will not be installing Toolbox at this time, skip to step 7. Double-click the CanoScan Toolbox folder/icon.
Double-click the CanoScan Toolbox Installer icon. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation. Once the installation of Toolbox is complete, you should then access the ScanGear CS folder also located in the MacOS X folder. From the ScanGear CS folder, click the ScanGear CS Installer icon.
